What is colic in horses?
Colic is a serious medical condition that is the #1 cause of death in horses.  There are many kinds of colic, with many causes.  You could read all day about horse colic, and still be confused and not know what to do to help a horse currently having a colic episode.  There is much more detailed info on colic on this website, but here is the ‘nitty gritty’ on what to do if you suspect colic in your horse:

Most Common Signs of Colic:
Biting, kicking or staring at the belly area* Pain symptoms like agitation, pawing, and groaning * Sweating* ROLLING and THRASHING on the ground,*Straining to pass stools *Elevated heartbeat and breathing
If you see these signs, what do you do?

  1. Begin the ColicStop program immediately! (You knew we were going to say that, didn’t you?) ColicStop addresses the problem in 93% of colic types.  This is why we hope you have already purchased ColicSTOP for your horse’s first aid kit.
  1. Don’t let the horse roll if you can help it. Walk him slowly if he is trying to roll on the ground, if you can. If he is down and won’t get up, place a blanket or towel under his head to pad it. Caution, horses in extreme pain will kick and thrash and may injure you accidentally.
  2. Write down the horses’ vital signs:
Pulse per minute (press lightly under cheekbone to find pulse),    Respirations/Breaths per minute (watch the ribs move), Temperature (Place thermometer in the rectum and hold on to it!)
  3. Call your veterinarian.  Give him/her these ‘vital signs’.  Most of the time with the ColicSTOP program, by the time he or she gets to you, the horse will be better.  Also tell your vet of any other medical conditions you horse has, and any recent changes in the horse’s food, water or living situation.

HOW TO GIVE COLICSTOP TO YOUR HORSE:
4 EASY STEPS:
1.  Give full syringe of “ColicSTOP 1’ to the horse by mouth.
(ColicSTOP 1 comes in a convenient dosing syringe, like a wormer.  Place the nozzle in the side of the horse’s mouth and press the plunger down. Immediately, tip his head up with a hand under the jaw.  This will hold his mouth closed & keep him from spitting it out.)
2. Wait 10 minutes. If signs remain, then give ColicStop 2.
(ColicSTOP 2 comes in an easy-open container.  Open the ColicSTOP dosing syringe by pulling the plunger out the back.  Pour in ColicSTOP 2.  Replace plunger.  Give it in the same way as ColicSTOP 1.)
 3. Wait 10 minutes.  If any symptoms remain, give ColicSTOP 3 in the same way as ColicSTOP 2.
4. Wait one hour, then give ColicSTOP 4.
(Give ColicSTOP 4 even if you did not need to give ColicSTOP 2 or 3.  Give it one hour after any other ColicSTOP treatment. Pour contents into dosing syringe, repeat until full dose is given.)
General Notes on ColicSTOP treatment:
Most horses improve within 45 minutes of the beginning of the ColicSTOP program.   If there is no improvement, it is likely that your horse is one of the approximately 7% of horses who need surgical care.  This is a veterinary emergency and surgery should occur within 3-4 hours for best outcome.  The short time window for treating these rare cases is why it is best to consult your vet even after beginning the ColicSTOP program. Please read the full instructions and product information on ColicSTOP for best results.
